For the fourth time IBMC●INEB offered an international practical course for school teachers. This year the topic is “from science to medicine” and involved several research groups form our institute. This project is in partnership with FCUP and has EMBO, EMBL and Cus-MI-Bio engagement. The teacher establish contact with most of the recent scientific and technologic maters during the curse and make hands-on exercises and experiments suitable to be done in a classroom.
Ciência 2007 - Encontro Público com a Ciência

On the 14th of Abril 2007 IBMC-INEB participated in Ciência 2007 - Encontro Público com a Ciência at Pavilhão do Conhecimento in Lisbon. In a joint activity of the Associate Laboratory IBMC-INEB we showed how can a fly help in genetic research, we presented one of the most used microorganism in genetic engineering - the E.Coli, and discussed how biomaterials are being used by bioengineering to solve clinical problems.

On this exhibition INEB was associated to IBMC in a joint activity of the Associate Laboratory. Besides having models of materials to be used as biomaterials and examples of prostheses, we also engaged in doing short presentations for students and citizens who showed interest in putting questions and knowing more about what biomedical engineering is and what areas are being developed at INEB.

IBMC•INEB Laboratories have organized Semana da Ciência e Tecnologia 2006, which is an initiative from the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology. During this week we have received schools to participate in several activities such us debates based on ethical issues raised in GATTACA movie, experimental activities like DNA extraction, the students have played a game entitle PLAYDECIDE which regards genetic testing and it ethical problems. Two researchers went to schools to make some experiments like DNA fingerprinting and pGLO (bacteria transformation) in five different classes.During Science and Technology week Public Understanding of Science Office (PUSO) have been organized “Noites de Ciência na Fnac” as well. These were conversations about science to the general public with two scientists and one moderator. 21 de November - Reproduction 22 de November – Biomedicine, genetic engineering and tissue regeneration. The activities during the week have involved 256 students and 15 school teachers and an unknown number of general public.
On this exhibition INEB was associated to IBMC in a joint activity of the Associate Laboratory. Besides having models of materials to be used as biomaterials and examples of prostheses, we also engaged in doing short presentations (about 15-20 minutes each) for groups of students and citizens who showed interest in putting questions and knowing more about what biomedical engineering is and what areas are being developed at INEB. All together more than 20 presentations were done by INEB collaborators, as well as many other by IBMC members.

In 2005 the Science and Technology Week was part of a joint organization of the Associate Laboratory IBMC/INEB and included Noites de Ciência, a cycle of conferences that took place at the IBMC Auditorium from the 21st to the 26th November 2005 and that had as speakers several researchers from the Associate Laboratory IBMC/INEB. Students had the opportunity to visit the laboratory facilities and to get in touch with some of the current research projects of INEB. They were shown prostheses and implants currently used.

They could contact with different types of Biomaterials that are used in maxillofacial surgery, dentistry, orthopaedics, cardiology and cranioplasty and also visualize 3-D medical models fabricated by rapid prototyping.

In 2004 the Science and Technology Week was part of a joint organization of the Associate Laboratory IBMC/INEB event – Ver Ciência, which included, apart from open labs, other events such as: teleCiência, noites de Ciência, science@cinema, exposição de fotografia. In the initiative science@cinema a debate about A.I. (Artificial Intelligence), a film from Steven Spielberg, took place and was moderated by Cristina Martins and Fernando J Monteiro from INEB and Tiago Teixeira Correia from Escola Secundária Carolina Michaelis.

The Biomaterials Laboratory contributed to this event, jointly with IBMC, exhibiting examples of implants and medical devices, as well as a video about the importance of medical devices biomaterials in improving people’s quality of life. An interactive animation on the subject of osteoporosis was also available to visitors, as well as several interesting biomaterials websites.

The Way Engineering Cares for our Health

This exhibition was set-up in the framework of the "Science and Technology Week", an initiative of the Portuguese Ministry for Science and Technology. The general public and mainly students from local schools attended the exhibition. It was adapted from the exhibition presented at the event Arritmia see below. It consisted in varied interactive modules, adapted to the general public. Several institutions collaborated in its set-up, namely the ones that also collaborated in the event Arritmia, plus the CIMAR-Centro de Investigação do Mar.
Arritmia - Os Prolongamentos do Humano

The event "Arritmia - As Inibições e os Prolongamentos do Humano", held in Porto, in June 2000, included exhibitions aimed at promoting scientific culture. INEB participated in this event with an exhibition about Biomedical Engineering, consisting in varied interactive modules, adapted to the general public, and particularly to students. Several institutions collaborated in the set-up of this exhibition, namely CRPG-Centro de Reabilitação Profissional de Gaia, A. Salgado - Ortopedia, Lda., ELA-Estação Litoral da Aguda, Advanced Medical Solutions, Inc. (UK), and CINFU-Centro da Fundição.

The exhibition was integrated in the 12th European Conference on Biomaterials (September 1995, Porto).
