Short Biography

DS Nascimento is a researcher of the Stem Cell Biology Team and is particularly interested in the design and pre-clinical evaluation of novel cardiac therapies. Following a Biology degree at FCUP (1998-2003) and a PhD at the University of Aberdeen (2003-2008), she joined Dr. Perpétua Pinto-do-Ó (2008) on her efforts to implement a new research line in cardiac regeneration at INEB. Since then she has been engaged on a series of projects aiming at the identification of signals/molecules, either on cells or on the cardiac microenvironment (ie ECM), that may improve cardiac repair following injury and thus constitute good candidates for future investigation as cardiac cell therapies. Presently, she is focused on the paradigm that the mammalian heart displays a transient capacity to regenerate following birth and that extracellular matrix (ECM) / ECM-associated component(s) may be regulating this process. Diana has published 13 papers in international peer-review journals (h index=8) and has a strong background on animal models of cardiac injury and on the biology of progenitor/stem progenitor cells.
