The 3Na 2O-12TiO 2-57CaO-28P 2O 5 glass was heat-treated to form glass-ceramics under different conditions. The relationships between the heat-treatment conditions and the content of β-Ca 2P 2O 7 in the glass-ceramics, bioactivity of the glass-ceramics were investigated. The experimental results show that the glass-ceramics contain crystalline phases of β-Ca 2P 2O 7, CaTi 4(PO 4) 6, NaTi 2(PO 4) 3 and TiP 2O 7 after heat-treatment, in which β-Ca 2P 2O 7 crystalline phase is a dominant one; the content of β-Ca 2P 2O 7 crystalline phase in the glass-ceramics increases with the increase of nucleation temperature and time; and the glass-ceramics with more β-Ca 2P 2O 7 crystalline phase has a better bioactivity. The role of heat-treatment in increasing the content of β-Ca 2P 2O 7 crystalline phase in the glass-ceramics is attributed to the crystallization of β-Ca 2P 2O 7 involved in the simultaneous occurrence of the glass phase separation and nucleation processes. Due to the better ability of β-Ca 2P 2O 7 in promoting bioactivity, the glass-ceramics with more β-Ca 2P 2O 7 phase have stronger bioactivity. Therefore, the bioactivity of the glass-ceramics could be changed by heat treatment.
