INEB researcher granted the L’Oréal – UNESCO Award for Women in Science

Inês Gonçalves, INEB researcher was granted the L’Oréal – UNESCO Award for Women in Science, and was selected among 100 applications.

Inês Gonçalves stood out for developing a biomaterial capable of eliminating the bacterium Helicobacter pylori of the stomach. The infection caused by this bacterium affects more than half the world population and it is strongly linked to gastric cancer. Inês Gonçalves, in cooperation with IPATIMUP, commits her work to the development of the aforementioned biomaterial’s potential in the prevention of cancer. The goal is to find an effective alternative to antibiotics-based treatment of the infection, which fails in 1 out of 5 cases.

The award, which was handed out in a ceremony at the Páteo da Galé in Lisbon, has been rewarding outstanding women in science since 2004, with the intention of distinguishing and further encourages Health and Environment research conducted by female doctorates. Previous laureates include Maria Oliveira (INEB, 2009).
