RECENT PUBLICATIONS: Marked socioeconomic inequalities in hip fracture incidence rates during the Bone and Joint Decade (2000–2010) in Portugal: age and sex temporal trends in a population based study

INEB researchers recently published an article in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, available since January 19th 2016. The article is entitled "Marked socioeconomic inequalities in hip fracture incidence rates during the Bone and Joint Decade (2000–2010) in Portugal: age and sex temporal trends in a population based study" and is authored by Carla Maria Oliveira, Sandra Maria Alves and Maria de Fátima Pina.

The incidence of hip fracture (HF) over time can be explained by a variety of factors including socioeconomic. We analysed HF temporal trends during the Bone and Joint Decade in Portugal 2000–2010, by regional socioeconomic status (SES), sex and age. In this study we found SES-sex-age inequalities in temporal trends. Marked SES inequalities were identified among women aged 65–79 years with a persistent, decreasing trend only in the affluent. However, such SES inequalities vanished among the oldest women; the same was not observed in men, for them, there were almost no declining periods. Overall, despite some successful periods of decreasing trends, incidence rates did not improve in almost all age groups and both sexes.
