BEYOND THE LAB COAT: Tiago Esteves

Tiago José Arieira Esteves, born on May 28th 1988 in Viana do Castelo, is a PhD student at INEB. Unlike the majority of these students, he is one of those that switched the lab bench by the computer bench in the name of research in the biological sciences field, dissecting his colleague’s scientific photo albums in search for answers about biological systems organization and behaviour.

Tiago has an academic background in biomedical engineering, and first came to INEB on June 2009, for a 1-month internship in the scope of his B.S. degree. By then he joined the team of Aurélio Campilho and Jorge Alves to work in the field of image analysis. He then continued pursuing this subject and in 2012 he started his PhD work with Pedro Quelhas.
At INEB, his pathway goes beyond his PhD work, being a member of the Science Club organizing committee in 2012/2013.

Main Challenge(s):
Currently, my main challenge (as part of my PhD) is to perform cell detection and tracking in biological science images, and what motivates me is to develop a tool in order to help the persons I work with.

INEB in one word:
Innovator.
INEB always look forward trying to develop new science.

Beyond the lab coat...
I enjoy to travel, play with my dog (knows a lot of tricks!), run, go out with friends...

The Movie:
The Lord of the Rings (Peter Jackson)

The Book:
O Principezinho (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, 1943)

Meanwhile, in Rome

The Trip:
I love to travel and one of my wishes is to visit all the 7 Wonders of the World.

If I wasn’t a scientist, I would be…
an astronaut!
